life objective?

As i was looking at my blog, and thinking about how I should probably update the title, "here with a purpose", because I am no longer in Guatemala, I realized that I wasn't just in Guatemala for a purpose, I'm also here, on earth, for a purpose. I guess I haven't really thought much about this, because I have no idea what my purpose here on earth is, just like I didn't know what my purpose in Guatemala was. I knew that God had me there for a reason. That I made it into the Outtatown program because God wanted me to be there. So I guess I'm here on earth because God wants me here. I don't feel like I can do any great things, or change anyone's life... but God thinks differently. He sees all the small things I do, like smile at the person passing me on the street, who is having a horrible day, or buying a drink for my friend just because i felt like it. There are so many small things we can do without even realizing that they're significant to someone else. So is this my purpose? To do small things for others that make them happy? I'm not sure... but I do know that God put me on this earth for a reason, and one day I hope I can figure out what it is. These are just some thoughts I've had recently that I guess I just needed to get out.

My life right now seems really insignificant to me. So these thoughts are really hard for me to actually believe as truth. I wake up in the morning, go to work for 3 hours, come home and maybe run, maybe sit in my room doing nothing… and then I go back to work for another 3 hours. How can I be serving God while this is the way I’m living? I guess I could start with this

Hold your tongue.
Don’t talk about that person that way.
Forgive the friend you haven’t talked to.
I want to show you the sunset.
Look and see how short life is and how your troubles are not worth worrying about.
Buy that bottle of wine and call your friend and see if he can get together to talk about the thing he’s been wanting to tell you.

I read this in a book a while back, and I realized that I haven’t been listening to God for the random little things that he wants to show me, or what he’s been telling me to do. It doesn’t have to be hard… I just need to listen. Maybe that’s my purpose. Listening. And doing. Can that be it? Just following God?

This doesn’t sound right to me.
Courtney’s purpose in life: To Follow God.

I mean… it seems easy. Like I have no objective in life. But I do! Following God is my objective. That can get me so far in life. He’ll show me what I should be doing with my life when I don’t know. And even if He doesn’t show me clearly, He’ll be there to guide me.

Sorry I’m all over the place. I guess this is my way to sort my thoughts. So, I guess that’s it. That’s me. That’s my objective

Such love is this for me.

I was watching this video in church in Guatemala one day, and it really hit me. Jesus really loves us this much. That He would throw away His life on earth, so that when we're done living ours, we can join Him in heaven. He not only threw His life away for us, He threw it away on a cross. The most painful, humiliating death you can endure.
This is Jesus, in His glory- King of heaven, dying for ME.

How can Jesus love ME this much...
It's unfathomable.
And yet, it's true... and it's real.
and it happened for me.

Stupid empty God-Hole.

Someone once told me that everyone has a God-hole, and we try to fill it with everything that makes sense to us, until we realize that only one thing can fill it. It hurts to watch people search and fill that hole with anything but the holy spirit. People are so lost, and you can tell that they are searching for something bigger to fill the hole, some higher power to fill their lives.

I recently realized that I have become victim to this empty "God-hole". I've been really angry with God, wondering where the heck He's hiding, and why He would hide from me, but then I realized that I was trying to fill that hole with anything I could find, and it was just leaving me feeling more empty. I was reading in James the other day, and here's what it told me: "Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is an unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do." So when I try to fill that hole with something other than God, my loyalty to Him is shared.. and that is the last thing that God wants. That also answers the question "where was God when I needed Him?", because it says in James that such people should not expect to receive anything from God.

I'm really not sure what to take from this, and how to change how I'm living because of it. I have a lot of stuff to figure out... and I feel like this just makes it much more confusing. But, I believe that once I open myself up to God, and let Him speak to me, He will, and He will make it worthwhile.

The End.

Well, I got home from beautiful Guatemala 2 weeks ago, and I miss it incredibly. The last week of being there, we stayed at a convent in Antigua. We debriefed everyday, sharing stories about our year. Here's how this year affected me:

When I first got to Outtatown, I hated it. I was with a group of people I didn't know, which was so out of my comfort zone, and I was just really homesick. I tried to talk to some of the girls to get to know them, and sometimes I could get my mind off going home, but it was really hard when I knew I still had 8 months to go.

When we got to Pioneer Camp, I remember sitting on the dock with Alanna and Laura. We were talking about being on Outtatown, and how its really hard to be here when there's things or people at home that we want to go back to. I remember Alanna saying that it really is a privilege to be here, because so many people could never have a chance to do something like this. I realized that I needed to change my attitude after that, and really try to enjoy being on Outtatown, because I would definitely regret not stepping out of my comfort zone.

So while I was on the canoe trip, I had this feeling from God that I just needed to trust Him. To stop worrying about every little freaking thing, and trust Him. I had no idea why I was on Outtatown, but God would work that out for me, and I was there for a reason. So I really tried to trust God with that, and have a good attitude through the year, because I knew that God was gonna work through me in ways that I couldn't imagine.

So while I was on the Vancouver Urban Plunge, I was sitting on the street panhandling, and a man put 3 quarters in my cup, plus a note, and walked past me. I opened the note and it read "could you use $20 or maybe $30? Follow me." So, I guess I'm really naive, because I didn't know why he would pay me $20 or $30. I didn't follow him though.. thankfully. So once I got back with my group, i showed some people the note, and they were kind of scared for me because i was sitting on my own, and something awful could have happened. I really don't know how that experience affected me yet. I felt like an object that someone wanted to use. I hated thinking about the girls who start out on the street with nothing just go to prostitution, because it's easy. I think about how I would love to help them to get off the street, and live  normal lives, and know that they are worth way more than they think, but at this point in my life, I don't have the motivation or confidence in myself to do something like that. maybe one day I'll think back to this experience and want to do something about it.

We went back to a camp that we had been to for a couple weeks, Camp Kawkawa, and had a worship night. Throughout the whole night, I was searching for God, trying to feel the power of Him, but I couldn't. When the official worship night was over, i went to get communion, and just started praying to God, not knowing why I was feeling so far from Him. Suddenly I started crying and I didn't even know why. I felt this massive amount of love from God, like He was right there with me, hugging me. I had never felt God like that before. We had just had girls week a couple of weeks before, and one of the main points Sharon talked about was in Genesis, how God made the earth, stars, sun and moon, the plants and animals and they were all good. Then He created human beings, in His own image. he looked over at what He had made and saw that it was VERY good. God made me very good. That thought to me was so powerful, and I knew that God made me exactly how He wanted me, and He loves me incredibly. I talked to Laura, my mentor, that night, and she gave me this analogy of God, standing right in front of me, arms wide open, just waiting for me to run into them. So that was a really good eye opening moment for me to really know how much i mean to God.

I really loved first semester. It made me think a lot about my relationship with God, and what I really wanted it to look like. It also made me realize that I have to look for God, and I can't just expect Him to show up. I had to trust Him with a lot of things, and I realized that I will not understand why things are happening, and God isn't saying anything about it, until much much later, when something happens and I understand why God did that to me. I guess I didn't really realize that in the first semester, because I was at the point where I didn't understand what God was doing, and much much later (maybe a couple weeks ago) i figured out some things that didn't make sense.

So when I was at home for Christmas, I was really excited to see how my life had changed, and how motivated I would be to follow Jesus, and do what He wants for me, but when I got home, I quickly realized that it wasn't easy, and I fell back into my old routine that I had before Outtatown. I was trying to follow God, but I knew that I really didn't want to. It was hard for me to want that, when I knew that it really wasn't something I wanted. I was hoping that when Outtatown started up again, my motivation to seek God out would come back, and I would be okay again. So I desperately waited for the day to come, where we would drive away from life here, and move into something completely different.

Once we got to Guatemala, my focus was definitely not on God. I knew I needed Him, but I kept getting distracted by being a tourist in Antigua. I didn't change the way I lived from when I was at home at Christmas. I was in this drought that I had never experienced before and i didn't know how to change it. I didn't even want to try and change it anymore, so i stopped trying. It was really hard for me to want to follow Him, and to fight for it. I went through all of my time in Guatemala hopelessly searching for God, not finding Him, and giving up. We didn't have any scheduled time set out for God, so I never really cared enough to make time for Him.

I had an amazing time in Guatemala, and I don't regret anything I did there, or didn't do. I learned a lot in the last week of being there about who I am, and who I am in God. He loves me, and I am very good. It's still a struggle for me to remember that everyday, but I'm working on it, and working on making my relationship with God something incredible.

Service week.

These past 3 weeks have gone by incredibly fast, and I have no idea where they went. Last week me and 3 other students, Viktor, Jordan, and Carissa, went to "hell". Not literally...  we had a service project in a town called Esquintla, which is incredibly ugly, and incredibly hot- hence the name "hell". There we worked in a school called Mana De Vida. This school was started by a couple who live in Esquintla, who wanted to help out the kids who aren't able to go to school. The school runs from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m., and includes breakfast and lunch, which is what we helped out with most of the week. The days there were incredibly long and tiring, but it was a blessing to work with those kids, and to see them be so happy, especially when they have so little. I could really tell that they loved school, and it was probably the best part of their day. So everyday we would wake up at 7:20, to be at the school by 8:00. We ate breakfast at the school with the kids, and then would start helping out in the kitchen or in the classrooms. If we had a bit of time where we werent working, we would stand and watch the kids scream songs they learned at school. At that time, we would always have kids wanting to sit on our laps, or hold our hands. They absolutely loved having us at the school - they would call me "miss courtney" or i guess it was more like "miss cony", because they have such a difficult time with my name. It was an incredible week of service for me, and putting the kids before myself, and trying to keep a good attitude when it could have been so easy to be angry all day. To actually think about how we made a little bit of a difference in those kids lives just by being there to hold their hand, or smile at - since I could hardly understand a word of spanish they spoke to me, if you can even call that spanish... it was all mumbles and spanish slang.

Our last week of spanish was really good, played a lot of games, and laughed a lot. It went by incredibly fast, and I honestly dont even know what I all did last week. But now its Semana Santa, we woke up at 2:30 this morning to walk into Antigua from San Juan, to look at all the alfombras and processions going on. I am exhausted and ready for a nap.

So we have a little over one week left here in Guatemala, and its a really bittersweet feeling. I'm really excited to come home to regular life, but i'm also sad to leave this beautiful country. Its been an amazing 3 months.

my purpose.

What´s my purpose? I really don´t know. Its hard to know when I never think about it. I think it could be smiling at the little children on the street who are selling braclets and hair ties, or holding little children who don´t get held very often,  or figuring out who i really am, and what my weaknesses are. Theres a lot of things that can show me who i am, and why i´m here.. and i´m just starting to figure it all out. God is such a big part of this, and i only recently realized this. I´m working right now at fighting for my relationship with Him, because I know that it will not get better unless i work for it. He´s definitely been showing me who I am, and helping me see the areas in which i need to give my all and really take everything in.

february 18

It's been a while since I've written anything. Sorry I haven't been updating, it's been super crazy over here, with not a lot of time to do anything. So a couple weeks ago now, we had a free weekend in El Salvador. Probably my favorite part so far. We just sat around all day, swimming in the ocean, and laying in hammocks. We got American food everyday, Which is something we all crave, basically all the time. It was just an amazing weekend all around. When we got back to San Juan, we stayed there for one night, and then got up early to leave for our service weeks in coban. We started the week out by visitin the schools we would be working with for the next two weeks. The put on a show for us, playing the marimba, and doing some dancing. The weekend came, and we had a 5 hour drive up to a small Mayan village. There we had some free time to swim in the river. We basically Hung out with the children in the village for the first day, and at around 6:00 we were put into host families to stay with for the weekend. I was put in a group with Erin ad Leah. We stayed with a family of about 10 people. The kids loved us so much, and they were so much fun. We has a lot of tickle fights that weekend. So this week has been incredibly long, and tiring. It started on sunday when we went to one of the schools, had a church service and played soccer for the afternoon. Then on Monday through thursday, we've been fillings little bags with dirt to plant trees. Ts been super repetitive, and really hard to keep a good attitide, but it's almost over. This weekend we are going somewhere hot and beautiful. I have no idea what it's called, but I'm super pumped, and ready for some relaxing :)
